I have a dalek compost bin, so really a cold system, but it swings between hot and cold depending on what I put in it. A fresh batch of bokashi-pickled vegetables and some nettles will get it running really quite hot. All of the worms disappear and even the mice move out. A 2-4 weeks later it will have cooled down again and hundreds of composting worms are once again visible at the top, with absolutely no sign of the nettles any more and only the toughest stuff from the bokashi still recognisable.

Yes, Sarah, I noticed the heat rising from my dalek on several occasions during the summer. I have a bin of bokashi waiting to be added now, so am looking forward to seeing what happens. I do not have any mice I am pleased to say, although I am not holding my breath now that winter is coming! Must get some nettles and try them, too. It is all such a buzz, I would never have believed how involved I could become.
